Panama is holding a presidential election on Sunday while facing an odd situation: The most prominent player in the race is not on the ballot. Ricardo Martinelli, a former president of the Central American nation and known to his supporters as “El loco,” or the crazy one, had been a top contender until he was disqualified because of a money laundering conviction. But from inside the Nicaraguan Embassy in Panama City where he was granted asylum, Mr. Martinelli has been strenuously campaigning for José Raúl Mulino, a former public security minister who was his running mate and took his place on the ballot. Mr. Mulino has led the polls in a field of eight candidates, vowing to return Panama to the economic growth it experienced under Mr. Martinelli, who was president from 2009 to 2014.

The CMO role at several companies, including Walgreens, Uber, and Starbucks, has been eliminated. A 2023 McKinsey report found that 40% of Fortune 500 companies don't have a CMO or another growth- or customer-related position in their CEO's executive committee. But role models like Rare Beauty's CMO, Katie Welch, offer young marketers hope for the profession's future. "Businesses that are eliminating the CMO role or pulling it into something else, the leadership in those companies don't see the value of marketing," she said. CNN —As the first over-the-counter birth control pill in the United States hits store shelves, the company behind the product, Perrigo, is taking steps to ensure women are aware of this new contraception option. It’s a different formulation than what is in combination hormonal birth control pills, which contain both progestin and estrogen. Combined birth control pills may carry risks for people with uncontrolled hypertension or blood clot risks for smokers older than 35. Most birth control pills are up to 99% effective at preventing pregnancy if taken as instructed. “I’m always a little skeptical of Big Pharma and their partnerships, but I think the general principle of having highly effective over-the-counter birth control be over the counter, that’s empowering” she said.

Read Your Way Around the World is a series exploring the globe through books. The San Francisco Bay Area is anything but a monoculture. Go to San Francisco, hop across the Bay Bridge into Oakland, then head up into Richmond or down to Hayward, and the landscape around you — the people, the food, the particular cadence of walk and talk — will morph. The Bay Area is known for starting shit. The Bay Area is unafraid to be first.

Better tech could help workers prioritize calls, avoid logistical issues, and catch crucial details. While many people in the industry have acknowledged a need for better emergency tech, its implementation has varied across states. Anthony Mignogna, the chief of communications for Delaware County Emergency Services, recalled using the transcription service while taking a call from someone in danger. Carbyne also recently rolled out an AI-powered triage system designed to help centers prioritize calls during high-volume periods or nonemergency situations. He called on the federal government to step in to help centers access new services.

Panama’s electoral tribunal disqualified former President Ricardo Martinelli from running in the May presidential election in light of a 10-year sentence he received for money laundering. The body, which oversees the country’s electoral process, reached the decision on Monday night after 10 hours of debate. In a statement, it said his disqualification was the result of his having been sentenced to more than five years in prison for an intentional crime. Panama’s Supreme Court last month denied Mr. Martinelli’s appeal of the money laundering conviction in a case in which prosecutors said funds were obtained from government contractors for the 2010 purchase of a publishing house. A few days after the court ruling, Mr. Martinelli, 71, a conservative businessman who led Panama from 2009 to 2014, was granted asylum by Nicaragua and fled to its embassy in Panama City, the capital.

Atmospheric rivers caused downpours in the Bay Area on Wednesday, bringing cable car services to a halt, before moving on to Los Angeles and San Diego by Thursday. Officials in Santa Barbara County raised evacuation advisories to orders on Saturday, calling on residents to be at a "very high state of readiness." Heavy rain and extreme weather caused roadway erosion at San Onofre's lower parking lot, with images on social media showing sections of the lot collapsing onto the beach below. A Sunday update from the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center predicted risks of rainfall exceeding flash flood guidance across swathes of the state with "high risk" — estimated at 70% probability — for San Diego and Orange Counties. The storm comes as the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office announced it was investigating three deaths in late January as related to California's last encounter with heavy storms.

Dalia Jacobs, a Palestinian brand strategist and creative director, told CNN she wears a keffiyeh made in her hometown, Hebron, when she travels abroad. The keffiyeh “says who I am and carries my family’s history with me always,” she told CNN. To combine the two pieces of Palestinian cultural heritage, she used traditional embroidery techniques to adorn her black and white keffiyeh. During the 1960s, there was another resurgence in the keffiyeh as political symbol, with the scarf worn by both men and women. Yasser Arafat, who served for decades as the chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization, was often pictured wearing the black and white keffiyeh, which further cemented the scarf as a symbol of the Palestinian national struggle.

CNN —A Philippine court has granted bail for Leila De Lima, one of the most vocal critics of ex-President Rodrigo Duterte’s bloody “war on drugs” after being held in police custody for over six years. Organizations like the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch have criticized De Lima’s detention, calling it “arbitrary” and demanding her immediate release. De Lima’s bail “must lead to dismissal of last bogus charge against her,” Amnesty International said in a statement on Monday. “The court’s granting of Leila de Lima’s bail application is indeed a welcome development. “Leila has been targeted by the government for her criticism of the murderous ‘war on drugs’ and other human rights violations.

"Finally, I will be freed," De Lima told reporters outside the court after her bail was granted. Two of three cases against De Lima have been dismissed and she had sought bail in the one pending case on health grounds, which the court granted on Monday. UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Iran is carrying out executions “at an alarming rate,” putting to death at least 419 people in the first seven months of the year, the United Nations chief said in a new report. That's a 30% increase from the same period in 2022. In all seven cases, information received by the U.N. human rights office “consistently indicated that the judicial proceedings did not fulfil the requirements for due process and a fair trial under international human rights law,” Guterres said. The government said “a minimum of” 22,000 people arrested during the protests were pardoned, but the secretary-general said it was difficult to verify the arrest and release numbers. Guterres expressed concern that a number of individuals who were pardoned then received summonses on new charges or were rearrested, including women activists, journalists and members of minority groups.

Why is it important for you to elevate the stories of those who exist in that very particular space between cultures? But more than anything, when you’re from two different places, you’re a bit of an outsider of both. And you do see the absurdity of both sides in some ways, and you understand it probably more than others would. Sept 23 (Reuters) - Facial recognition technology used on match tickets by top flight soccer club Palmeiras has helped the Sao Paulo Public Security Secretariat (SSP) arrest 28 criminals in four games at the Allianz Parque stadium, the government body said on Friday. However, its use has also helped the SSP apprehend criminals before they enter the stadium to watch the team play. "We invested in the implementation of facial recognition to protect our greatest asset, which is the Palmeiras fans," club president Leila Pereira said in a statement. The facial recognition technology at matches allows real-time analysis to detect fans who have bought tickets from touts, the use of false or third-party documents, outstanding arrest warrants, non-compliance with court orders and sanctions. The SSP have issued arrest warrants related to theft, embezzlement, robbery and drug trafficking.
